The Fox in the Forest is a trick-taking game for two players, each playing cards to win tricks against the other over multiple rounds. Players score points during a round by winning tricks containing specific cards and at the end of a round based on the number of total tricks they won.

Overview
Be the first to reach 21 points through taking or not taking tricks (according to the point distribution). Each round consists of 13 tricks.
Gameplay
At the beginning of a turn, a player plays a card. The second player must play a card of the same suit. If they cannot, they are free to play any card. The card that matches the suit of the Decree (trump) card wins. If both cards are of the same suit, the card with the higher rank wins. If no one has yet scored 21 or more points, a new round begins with a new Decree card.
Cards with odd-numbered ranks have special abilities that can affect who wins the trick or a player's hand. This is displayed in the gameplay area.
Scoring is related to the number of tricks taken. Take note that taking all the tricks is not the goal of the game. The most points are scored from taking none/few tricks or most but not all tricks.
Card Rules Clarificiations
A card's ability is executed when the card is played and before either the follower's card is played or the winner of the trick is determined. This means that if someone leads with a 3 (Fox) of Keys and switches out the Decree card to be the Moon suit, they can potentially lose the trick if the follower plays a Moon card.
Witch
The 9 (Witch)'s suit does not change until both cards have been played, and whether both cards are 9 (Witch).
If two 9 (Witch)s were played, the Witch's suit doesn't change. If one card is of the trump suit, it wins. If neither card is of the trump suit, the leader's card is the winner (since the follower didn't follow).
In the same vein, a player cannot follow a trump card with a non-trump 9 (Witch), since the Witch doesn't change suits until both cards are played.
Swans
If two 1 (Swan)s are played, the card of the trump suit wins. If neither card is of the trump suit, the leader's card is the winner (since the follower didn't follow). In either case, the player who did not win the trick would lead the next trick.
Variants
For a shorter game, the goal can be set to 16 points. For a longer game, the goal can be set to 35 points.
